The Workshop – New in 2026
Create your own print in The Workshop at the Prison Museum. Here, both children and adults can try linocut printing and take home a unique handmade print.
During the prison's years of operation, many inmates worked in the workshops behind the prison walls. Some produced goods for local businesses, while others spent their free time on handicrafts and creative projects. In The Workshop, you can experience the satisfaction of working with your hands and creating your own print from scratch.
Using a linoleum block, printing ink and a roller, you'll experiment with shapes, patterns and designs while discovering how a print is made. When you've finished, you'll take your artwork home as a special souvenir from your visit.
The Workshop is an activity for children and their accompanying adults who want to combine history, creativity and quality time together.
Printing kits are available for DKK 25.
Open every day during the summer holidays from 29 June to 9 August:
11:00–13:30 and 14:00–16:00.
FAMILY ACTIVITY: THE HIDDEN STAMP
As a newly arrived prisoner, you and your family receive a workbook from a former inmate filled with puzzles and challenges. Solve them to uncover the Hidden Stamp—the key to earning your freedom.
Along the way, the former prisoner shares tips on how to escape life behind bars by solving Morse code, recognising patterns and completing a variety of clever tasks. The trail also includes creative activities and games, making it fun for younger children as well.
You can take the workbook home after your visit, where you'll find even more ideas for fun activities.
Bonus fact: The workbook cover is a replica of the authentic exercise books once issued to inmates at Horsens State Prison.
The activity and workbook are free with admission.
Available every day during the summer holidays:
Weeks 27–33: 10:00–17:00
Weeks 34–35: 10:00–16:00
CHILDREN'S ACTIVITY: THE BIRD HAS ESCAPED
Did you know that prisoners were allowed to keep two birds in their cells? Of course, they had to stay in a birdcage—but perhaps a few managed to escape and fly around the prison.
This idea is the inspiration behind the Prison Museum's new children's activity. Eight different birds are hidden throughout the museum. When you receive your admission ticket, you'll also receive an activity booklet introducing the birds. The booklet includes pictures and names of each bird, and you can tick them off as you find them.
Can you spot all eight birds?
The activity is designed for younger children aged 2–8 and is free with admission.
Available every day during the summer holidays:
Weeks 27–33: 10:00–17:00
Weeks 34–35: 10:00–16:00
THE WORLD'S WILDEST ESCAPE IN VR
Step into a whole new world at the Prison Museum and experience an unforgettable prison escape in Virtual Reality. Recreate the legendary escape of Escape King Lorentzen by crawling through an 18-metre tunnel in a fully immersive 360-degree VR experience.
Using VR equipment, you'll find yourself inside the narrow tunnel, equipped with a flashlight and a trowel as you attempt to dig your way to freedom. One of the museum's experienced staff members will guide you through the equipment and share the fascinating story of Escape King Lorentzen, whose motto was:
"Where there's a will, there's a way."
